The Jubilee English Block

Aligned with the Science of Learning, the Jubilee English Block is designed to systematically build students' language, reading and writing proficiency through explicit instruction, structured practice and meaningful application.

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics (Early Years)

In the early years, students receive explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics to develop strong foundational decoding skills. Teaching follows a structured sequence that supports students to acquire, practise and apply these skills with increasing accuracy and automaticity.

Spelling and Daily Review

Spelling instruction focuses on understanding spelling patterns, word structure and morphology. Regular daily review strengthens retrieval of previously taught patterns and supports long-term retention of learning.

Handwriting

Handwriting instruction develops correct letter formation and writing fluency. Building automaticity in handwriting reduces cognitive load, allowing students to focus more effectively on composing sentences and expressing ideas. In the middle and upper years, students are also introduced to keyboarding skills, developing efficient and accurate typing so they can compose, edit and publish writing using digital tools.

Reading

Reading instruction develops a range of skills aligned with Scarborough's Reading Rope, including decoding, fluency, vocabulary, background knowledge and comprehension. Students engage in structured reading experiences that build both word recognition and language comprehension.

Writing

Students write for a range of purposes and audiences, developing their ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. Instruction includes modelling, guided practice and opportunities for independent writing.

Across the English block, learning is grounded in rich literature, including picture books, short stories and novels. These texts provide meaningful contexts for developing vocabulary, knowledge, reading comprehension and writing skills. Ideas, concepts and learning from these texts intentionally intertwine across all components of the block, creating strong connections between reading, spelling, vocabulary and writing while building students' knowledge and understanding of the world.
